World's First Artificial Diamond Substrate Exposure Experiment in Space

Adamant Namiki Precision Jewel Co., Ltd. (Adachi-ku, Tokyo; President and CEO, Riyako Namiki) will conduct the world's first aerospace exposure experiment on its artificial diamond, KENZAN Diamond™, at the International Space Station (ISS) for approximately six months.

The purpose is to see how our KENZAN Diamond™ PCB could be affected by severe environments such as outer space. The results will help us identify the elements necessary for diamond substrate applications expected in aerospace and next-generation semiconductors, as well as improve quality and reliability. This time, as the first step, we will check whether the materials themselves can withstand the temperature and radiation conditions of outer space. The second step will be to launch an environment-resistant device fabricated on a KENZAN Diamond™ board. We hope to contribute to the future of space development by proving that diamond devices can be used even in outer space.

World's First Artificial Diamond Substrate Exposure Experiment in Space

KENZAN Diamond™ is an artificial diamond substrate grown by heteroepitaxy on a sapphire substrate using our unique diamond microneedles. Since the development of large-diameter artificial diamond in 2015, practical small-scale production of 1-inch artificial diamond substrates has now been established, and we have successfully produced 2-inch diamond substrates at the lab level. We aim to establish the technology as a next-generation semiconductor substrate. This exposure test is part of the Space Delivery Project sponsored by Space BD (Chuo-ku, Tokyo). Materials will be transported to the ISS by the end of the 2021 fiscal year, and will remain there for 6 months before being transported back to Earth around June 2022.

Space Delivery Project

The Space Delivery Project utilizes a new external experiment facility, Exposed BAS (ExBAS). ExBAS will be installed on the Exposed Facility (i-SEEP) on the International Space Station (ISS) Japanese Experiment Module Kibo. Space BD will take the lead in inviting a wide range of organizations to participate in the project and has provided support from the selection of objects to their launch and return on the ground. For the first Space Delivery Project, Space BD will deliver various items such as research materials, photographs, and illustrations collected from a total of nine groups of private companies and research institutions.
